At Jasper Elementary School, Mrs. Burke, music teacher, taught her students the Wildcat Song. After learning the song in class, Mrs. Burke had a surprise for them. On two consecutive Friday mornings, the Wildcat Mascot showed up at Jasper Elementary School! Mrs. Burke and the Wildcat marched around the halls of Jasper Elementary and sang the Wildcat Song. It was a great way to spread paw-sitivity among students! One important program at Jasper Elementary School is the Leader In Me Program. Students were reminded that just like them, the Jasper Wildcat is a leader too.

On August 31, Ireland Elementary hosted their Fun Run Fundraiser. The fundraiser was successful, as the school raised $39,785, surpassing the goal of $35,000. The money will be used to purchase new playground equipment. Throughout the week, the students met with the team from MyBooster. Students watched a video daily with a message, learning about showing gratitude, stewardship, and more.

Throughout the fundraiser, students were given various fundraising goals to reach. Once the goals were reached, they received rewards. Rewards included extra recess with the Booster team, no homework days, and more. The 5th grade students had the opportunity to make their run a color run. When $30,000 was reached, students got to soak their teachers with super soakers. And, because they reached the goal of $35,000 before event day, Mrs. Bauer kissed a pig (not once, but twice)!

Ireland had a successful fundraiser and are very thankful for all of the support!

Last week at Jasper Middle School, students participated in a Young Hoosiers Book Tasting. Books were laid out on tables throughout the library. Students had the opportunity to spend a short period of time at each table and read the summary or a few pages of the books on the table. The Young Hoosier Annotated Nominee List has two levels, Intermediate, which is recommended for grades 3-5, and Middle Grade, which is recommended for grade 6-8. Each category has twenty different books by a variety of authors. Middle School students who read five books within the category will be invited to the April taco bar!

When walking into Mrs. Ondiek's FACS classroom, you are greeted by a sign that reads "What you see as cooking is really reading, problem solving, collaborating, measuring, gaining experience, experimenting, creating, delegating, communicating and most of all, learning." On Friday, August 26th, 7th graders in FACS class had their first cooking lab. Students are assigned into their kitchens and then were given various responsibilities to be scored on.

To start, everyone was required to put on an apron, tie back hair, wash hands and cover wounds. Everyone helped with preparing food and following cooking procedures. A member of the group was assigned the role of a table manager. The table manager got out the cooking and measuring equipment, set the table, wipe off the table after eating, put used towels and dishcloths into the dirty basket and put away all dishes after they are cleaned and dried. The dish washer wiped down the counter before the lab began, filled the sink halfway with hot soapy water, rinsed dishes into the garbage disposal before washing, washed all the dishes, and rinsed the dishes to remove soap. The dish dryer person got out the towels and dish cloths for the group, dried all dishes, cleaned the counter, ledge, and range top after use, cleaned and dried the sink and faucets and cleaned the dish drying rack. At the end of the lab, everyone was responsible for sweeping the floors.

In this lab, students were given an egg and were able to make their own creation. They made items such as french toast, egg sandwiches, scrambled eggs, egg in a basket and more. Students will have the opportunity to continue to make food items throughout the year and do hands on activities through the FACS class.

On Friday, students at Ireland Elementary participated in STEAM Day. STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics. Students participated in various activities. One activity was programming the robots. Students first learned how the buttons worked and were given the time to work with them. Then, they were challenged with the task of making the robot move around their chairs. Another task was playing an ice tumble game where students were challenged determine where to place blocks so their tower did not collapse.
