About Tenth Street

Tenth Street Elementary is located on Tenth Street in the heart of Jasper, IN.  The school serves close to 500 students in grades 3-5 and employs over 50 faculty and staff members.

The school was originally constructed in 1960 with an original square footage of 57,565 feet. Additions to the building and a total remodeling of the existing structure was completed in 1993.  The square footage after the renovation is 87,580 feet.   Tenth Street is equipped with a full-size gymnasium which seats about 600, a large library with access to an outdoor amphitheater and digital check-out/cataloging system , two computer labs with thirty-four computer stations in each, a music room, an art room, and a large playground with swings, 3 areas with climbing apparatuses , basketball courts, and large open field for outdoor games such as kickball, football and soccer.  Our school is located on about 2 acres, which is adjacent to Ruxer Field (Jasper High School's baseball field).  Parking is provided on the east of the school by the main entrance and along Tenth Street.

We have a diverse student population.  Students with special needs are placed in their least restrictive environment.  Special services are provided as needed by resource teachers, a speech pathologist, Dubois-Spencer-Perry Exceptional Childrens' Co-op, and a school social worker.

Students at Tenth Street Elementary participate in a variety of programs including Accelerated Reader, Accelerated Math, Tri-Kappa Pioneer Program, Food and Ag Day at the 4-H, Heritage Days at the Dubois County Museum, Indiana Day, JA (Junior Achievement), DI (Destination Imagination), PAL Program, Circle the State with Song, DARE, M.A.T.H. Bowl, Spell Bowl, Super Star Fun Day, and Character Education.  Each program is designed to recognize students for exemplary academics and behavior.  We focus our teaching on the Indiana Department of Education’s state standards at each grade level. Teachers utilize an online testing program with students called Acuity.  These assessment instruments allow teachers to collect and analyze student performance data, which helps them to plan instructional activities appropriately. Intervention groups are utilized for students who haven’t mastered the standards for their grade level.

The staff at Tenth Street is committed to excellence in education.  Our teachers design lessons that are intellectually engaging, requiring students to think and reason.  Students are treated as individuals and with the respect they deserve.

Tenth Street has many reasons to celebrate throughout the school year. Students are awarded for academic accomplishments, perfect attendance, Accelerated Reader (Lunch with the Principal and Principal for the Day), Honor Roll, SMILE Program (good behavior), SAC Awards (Special Achievement Citation), and also for their many smaller daily successes.

Staff and students are encouraged to utilize technology to facilitate the learning process. Internet accessible classroom computers, mobile laptop computers, LCD projectors, document cameras, and digital cameras are available for student use. In addition, a self contained computer lab equipped with thirty networked computers, laser printers, and scanners support the instructional program.

Finally, all successful schools understand the importance of building strong relationships with the families who live in the surrounding community.  The Tenth Street PTC is a group of involved parents who work tirelessly to support our school.  By working together, we can support our students by creating and sustaining the best possible educational environment.

Kent Taylor is the Principal of Tenth Street.  Our school hours are 8:00 - 3:00.  The office telephone number is 812-482-2529.
