ECA or End-of-Course Assessments

Beginning with the graduating class of the year 2000, every Indiana student must meet high educational standards in English and mathematics, in addition to all other state and local graduation requirements, in order to be eligible to graduate from high school. The State Board of Education has designated the Algebra I and English 10 ECA, as administered in the Spring of each year, as the high school graduation examination. Students who do not meet the state standards in English and/or mathematics on their first attempt will have four additional opportunities to pass the test - two times in grade 11 and two times in grade 12.

There are three ways for a student to meet the Graduation Qualifying Examination (GQE) standard. They are:

1. Achieve a passing score in English/Language Arts and Mathematics on the GQE, or
2. Successfully complete all Core 40 curriculum components with a grade of C or above, or
3. Meet all of the following requirements:

• Take the GQE in each subject area in which the student did not achieve a passing score at least one time every school year;
• Complete all remediation opportunities provided by the school;
• Maintain a high school attendance rate of 95 percent, with excused absences not counted against the student's attendance;
• Maintain a 1.5 GPA in the courses that make up the 24 credits specifically required by the state of Indiana for graduation;
• Demonstrate Grade 9 proficiency in English/Language Arts and mathematics by successfully passing four years of high school English and three years of high school math.

PSAT

The Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test is a co-sponsored program by the College Board and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). It's a standardized test that provides practice for the SAT and also allows students a chance to enter National Merit Scholarship Corporation scholarship programs. The PSAT/NMSQT measures critical reading skills, math problem-solving skills and writing skills. It is recommended that students take the PSAT/NMSQT during their junior year of high school. It provides an estimate of the score they might expect to receive on the SAT, while allowing them to become familiar with the types of questions they will see when taking the SAT. The national test date for the PSAT is always in October.

Jasper High School will offer the PSAT/NMSQT on Wednesday, October 17, 2012, from 8:00 am to approximately 11:00 am. This year, the state of Indiana has provided funding that will only pay for sophomores to take the PSAT.Therefore, Jasper High School will test ALL sophomores. Juniors will have to pay $14 to take the PSAT. Juniors will sign up to take the test in the guidance office. Only those who have signed up and paid the $14 by Friday, Aug. 24th will be tested. Checks need to be made payable to Jasper High School.

SAT

The SAT is a national college admissions examination developed by College Board. It is a three hour test that measures verbal and math reasoning skills students have developed over time and skills they need to be successful academically. It is typically taken by students in their junior and/or senior year of high school after they have taken the PSAT. The SAT is one indicator that colleges and universities use to determine a student's admission to their institutions. It allows them to compare a student's score with other applicants and also with their average score range. SAT scores are also used by many institutions as a basis of awarding merit-based financial aid. SAT scores are reported in critical reading, writing and math as a range from 200 to 800. A "perfect" score would be 2400. There are additional scores for the writing component. The test is administered seven times a year at national test sites. Jasper High School always hosts the test in December and in the spring. Students can register for the SAT by coming in to the Guidance office and picking up a registration packet, or log on to collegeboard.com and register online (preferred method by College Board). ACT

The ACT is a national college admission examination developed by ACT, Inc. It is a curriculum-based achievement test, not an aptitude test. It measures the knowledge and skills that students have achieved in English, mathematics, reading, and science. The recommended time to take the ACT for the first time is in the spring of the junior year of high school. The ACT is used by colleges and universities as part of the admissions process and is also used to determine merit-based financial aid. It also provides students a unique interest inventory that contains valuable information for career and educational planning. The ACT score is reported as a range of 1 to 36 in each of the areas of English, math, reading and science, and a composite score with a range of 1 to 36 which is an average of the four test scores. The test is offered six times a year at national test sites. Students can register for the ACT by coming in to the Guidance office and picking up a registration packet or log on to actstudent.org and registering online. ACT added a 30-minute Writing Test as an option to the ACT Assessment beginning with the February 2005 national test date. The Writing Test will complement the English Test with the combined information from both tests giving colleges and universities information about students' understanding of standard written English and their ability to produce a direct sample of writing. Because postsecondary institutions have different needs, the Writing Test will be an option to the ACT Assessment.
