Public Work Session

Public Work Session Tuesday, June 6, 2017 at 6:30 pm

Public Works Session

The GJCS Board of Trustees met in a public work session to discuss findings of a recent facilities feasibility study conducted by The Stenftenagel Group and Gibraltar Design, Inc.  The key take-aways of the study are as follows:

1.  There are significant facility needs to be addressed at all schools but most pressing at  Fifth and Tenth Street Elementary Schools.
2.  We are financially in a position to take care of those needs without levying more tax dollars in debt service than we already currently levy.  This means at no additional burden to our taxpayers.
3.  The window of opportunity to address these issues is now.

Please see the the attached PowerPoint presentation from the meeting.

HSAA Student-Athlete Tip of the Week (9-5-16)

"Promoting education based athletics in Indiana"

Swimmer Lilly King (IHSAA state champion from Evansville and Olympic gold medal winner) has been a headliner in the national news.

While her two gold medals have been part of the conversation, it's been more about her comments and firm beliefs about athletes cheating by using performance enhancing drugs. She believes in fair play.

Despite her young age and participating in the Olympics for the first time, she stood up for what's right! Then she backed it up by winning the gold medals.

There's so much to be said about doing things the right way and following the rules. Next time you think about taking a shortcut or doing something knowingly wrong, think again. Someone will eventually call you out!

IHSAA Student-Athlete Tip of the Week (4-4-16)

"Promoting education based athletics in Indiana"

With the 2016 Masters getting ready to take place in Augusta, Georgia, players are getting prepared in different ways.  Some chose to play in tournaments last week, and others decided to play practice rounds on the Augusta course.

Zach Johnson, a former Masters champion, talked about his preparation like this: "When the outcome becomes the issue, you have lost everything.”

As a student-athlete, be like Zach and don't lose focus on the importance of practice and preparation. Don't look at the final outcome of a game or season ahead of all the individual and team practices.

Practice and preparation will provide positive outcomes, even though all of them won't be winning ones!

Robotics Club Heading To State

The Thundercats are going to state! After two great showings at the Indiana FIRST district events at Harrison HS in West Lafayette and Perry Meridian HS in Greenwood, our high school robotics team has qualified for the state championship, April 14 - 16, in Kokomo, Indiana.

This year’s team has designed and built a truly robust little robot. It can take a beating as it zooms across the field and over obstacles. We’re very proud of our robot. We’d like to thank our many sponsors, especially those with us from the start of the season; Kimball Electronics, Jasper Engines and Transmissions, DoDSTEM, the Argosy Foundation, and NAVSEA at Crane. We have begun a new sponsor campaign to help us pay our way to state. Letters went out the past week to area businesses asking for a sponsorship donation. Please consider helping our team get to state. Donations are now being accepted at JHS for the Jasper Robotics Team. If anyone has any questions, please feel free to contact me, Fred Routson by email, froutson@gjcs.k12.in.us or cell, (812) 630-3057.

Notice to team members and their parents: the team is holding a mandatory meeting 6:30PM, Monday, April 4 in the robotics lab at JHS. Students and parents should attend. The focus of the meeting will be fundraising for the state championship.

Rachel's Challenge

All GJCS students in grades 7-12 will be participating in the Rachel’s Challenge presentation on January 13, 2016 in the Jasper High School gymnasium.  Rachel’s Challenge is based upon the life and writings of Rachel Joy Scott, who was the first victim of the Columbine school shootings in 1999.  Through her example, Rachel’s Challenge strives to positively impact the lives of millions with acts of respect, kindness, and compassion.

Rachel’s inspiring story provides a simple, yet powerful example of how small acts of kindness and acceptance motivate us to consider our relationships with the people we come in contact with every day.  Rachel’s story gives us permission to start our own chain reaction of kindness and compassions, which positively affects the climate in our schools and communities.

A special Community Event will be held for interested parents and community members on January 13, 2016 beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the JHS gymnasium.  All are invited to attend this special event.
